2016 Cadillac ATS Sedan

Sometimes we get caught up in the rivalry between Audi, BMW and
Mercedes to the extent of forgetting there are other luxury
brands in the market. But the thing is that these brands have a
history and drama that is not easy to wish away and however
much new brands try, they will still lag behind the German
brands, at least for the near future.

However, with time things will certainly change as the underdog
models become better and better. One model aiming for the top
of this segment is the 2017 Cadillac ATS sedan. At the start
many people put it off but with time, GM has improved their
flagship luxury sedan and many people have started taking
notice. Finally, America is going to have their own luxury
sedan to lock horns with German automobiles.

2016 Cadillac ATS Sedan Exterior

From whatever point you look at it, the Cadillac ATS bespeaks
of chiseled beauty. The exterior profile features flowing lines
and complementing cast –aluminum wheels presenting their best
indication yet of their intent of unseating the traditional
Germany-made luxury sedans.

Put off the Cadillac sedan at your own peril. The sedan’s body
is made up of high-strength steel alloy. Its grille is highly
streamlined and is flanked by HID headlights resulting in a
broad impression. The front also features a redesigned bumper
integrated with fog lights and air intakes. The vehicle rides
on a 109-3 inch wheelbase. Other features include an
aerodynamic front splitter, a rear spoiler and side body
panels.

The sedan rear also features LED taillights and a redesigned
bumper. The ATS-V the sedan’s high-performance variant features
18-inch forged-aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport
tires.

2016 Cadillac ATS Sedan Interior

The interior styling of the 2016 Cadillac ATS is very
sophisticated but yet well executed. The base models are
upholstered in leatherette while higher trims feature fine
leather upholstery.

The cabin also features some touches of carbon-fiber and wood
which make it look and feel very luxurious. However, I believe
the automaker got it all wrong in terms of its dimensions. This
is because while the front seats offer plenty of legroom, the
rear seats are somewhat confined. The head room is also cramped
which is not so good for a luxury car. Far from the constrained
space, the sedan features a CUE touch-screen infotainment
system.

The vehicle is offered in Base, Luxury, Performance and Premium
trims. Standard features on the base trim include keyless
entry, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, trial
version of the GM’s OnStar communications system and a
7-speaker Bose premium sound system with SD/USB/Auxiliary
ports. The luxury trim adds leather upholstery, power front
seats and a rearview camera. On the other hand, performance
trim adds a Driver Awareness Package which features forward
collision warning and lane departure warning .

The premium trim adds navigation, blind-spot monitoring, ABS,
wireless phone charging and magnetic ride suspension. The
high-performance ATS-V features Brembo brakes, magnetic
ride-control system as well as a 5-mode traction control
system.

Engine Specs and Performance

The 2016 Cadillac ATS offers three drive-train options.

The standard engine on the base models is a 2.5 L, 4-cylinder
engine which comes good with 202 hp at 6,300 rpm and 191 lb-ft
of torque at 4,400 rpm. The engine is EPA rated at 22mpg in
city and 32 mpg on highway drives.

The second engine is a turbocharged 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine
which is capable of producing 272 hp at 5,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft
of torque from as low as 3,000 rpm. This is the base engine of
the Coupes. The engine is paired with a 8-speed automatic
transmission system that sends power to the rear wheels (AWD is
offered as an option). RWD models have an option for a 6-speed
manual gearbox. Models with AWD and automatic transmission are
EPA rated at 22 mpg in city and 30 mpg on highway, RWD and
automatic models return 22 mpg city and 31 mpg on highway. On
the other hand the RWD models with manual are EPA rated at 20
mpg city and 29 mpg on highway.

The third engine is a 3.6 L, V-6 which comes good with 333 hp
at 6,800 rpm and 285 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. This engine
is offered in both AWD and RWD. Models with AWD return 19 mpg
on city and 28 mpg on highway drives while RWD models return 20
mpg city and 30 mpg on highway. The engine is paired to an
8-speed automatic transmission. The high-performance ATS-V adds
twin turbos on the 3.6 L V-6 to pump its output to 464 hp at
5,850 rpm and 445 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm. The engine is
offered in only RWD but buyers can opt for either a 6-speed
manual transmission or a 8-speed automatic system. While
standard ATS models run on gasoline, the ATS-V sips premium.

Price and release date

The automaker also understands that the best way to beat
competition is to offer quality specs at cheaper prices in
order to sway traditional buyers from the German brands. As
such, the base model has an MSRP of $ 34,200 making it the
cheapest among all Cadillac models.

Just to contrast, the ATS Coupe starts at $ 39,000. Fully
equipped models can fetch as much as $ 50,000. The more potent
Cadillac ATS-V sedan costs much more with an MSRP of $61,460.
Ticking all options will see you paying over $ 70,000.

Competition

The 2016 Cadillac ATS sedan enters into a market dominated by
the brands from the three German companies synonymous with the
word luxury in the world of motoring.

The Cadillac joins the likes of Lexus IS, Infiniti
Q50 and Volvo S60 in trying to unseat the trio of
Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4
and BMW 3
Series from the stranglehold on this segment.
