2017 Mazda CX-9

For nearly a decade, Mazda has managed to keep the charm of the
CX-9 alive through various modifications and updates. But a
good thing does not last forever; recognizing this Mazda has
finally decided to introduce its second generation which will
be a complete overhaul of the existing model.

The new 2017 Mazda CX-9 is set to deliver a powerful and
efficient engine as well as provide an overall sporting
character making the vehicle more charming than ever. The
vehicle will be based on the automaker’s “Kodo” design language
which will result in a stylish and suave profile. At one time,
Mazda hinted that the CX-9 would rival the Toyota Prado
but it is yet to come close to the Prado and it remains to be
seen if it can summon enough muscle to match up to the
segment’s benchmark, the Land Rover Discovery.

2017 Mazda CX-9 Exterior

The new Mazda exterior profile is based on Mazda’s ‘Kodo’
design language which translates to a very attractive 7-seater
SUV. Mazda says the vehicle is designed with the US market in
mind and the automaker hopes to sell 80% of all global sales in
the North American market.

The exterior of the 2017 Mazda CX-9 falls in line with the
other Mazda models more so on the front and rear ends. The new
CX-9 at 199.4 inches long is 1.2 inch shorter than the outgoing
model. However, the wheelbase is 2.2 inches longer. This
translates to shorter front and rear overhangs which culminate
with a dynamic stance. The vehicle features a significant
weight reduction of 190 lbs for the FWD models and 287 lbs for
AWD models. Other exterior features include tapered fenders, a
new and more upright grille and redesigned front and rear
bumpers. The grille is flanked by a pair of LED headlights.

The model is offered in two signature colors; Machine Gray and
Soul Red. The CX-9l will ride on large wheels which will
enhance its huge profile. Lower trim levels will feature 18 and
19-inch wheels while top trims will be equipped with 20-inch
wheels.

Sliding inside, you will be met by a three-row seating
arrangement which will accommodate 7 passengers. The second row
seats have a 60/40 split folding capability while the third row
seats folds completely flat to increase cargo space. A single
lever pull is used to adjust the second row seats to enable
easy access to the third row seats.

The automaker has dubbed the new Mazda CX-9 cockpit “Heads-Up
Cockpit”. The new cockpit features the Mazda Connect
infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen display on lower
trim models and 8-inch on high trims. The infotainment system
is mounted at the middle of the instrument panel. There is
another 4.6-inch abbreviated screen as well as a full-color
head-up display for cruise control, navigation, speed and other
important information.

The front is fitted with two USB ports which make it easy to
integrate Smartphones and stream music via Aha and Pandora
apps. The rear also features two USB ports for charging. The
cabin is illuminated with a white LED accent lighting while the
center console features backlighting.  When it comes to
safety, the CX-9 is
well equipped just like other models in the segment. Among
others, it features advanced blind-spot monitoring, lane
departure warning, radar cruise control with a range of between
15 and 90 mph, forward obstruction warning and smart city brake
support.

The vehicle will also feature a 12-speaker Bose premium sound
system specially tweaked for compressed digital music. The huge
weight loss allowed the designers to increase its window
thickness and redesign its noise-cancellation technology
leading to a 12% reduction in noise levels at 62 mph.

Engine Specs

Under the hood, the CX-9 is powered by a 2.5 L, turbocharged
Skyactiv engine which replaces the current 3.7 L, V 6 unit. The
engine produces only 250 hp but compensates it with a massive
310 lb-ft of torque. To make it sound even better, this amount
of torque is realizable in the lower part of rev range with the
peak coming at only 2,000 rpm and drops past the 4,000 rpm
mark.

The automaker is of the view that drivers rarely venture above
the 4,000 mark.  The engine is paired with a 6-speed
automatic transmission system which sends power to either the
front wheels or all wheels.

Price and release date

The vehicle is expected to debut this month at the upcoming Los
Angeles Auto Show to be held from 20th
29th. Sales will follow shortly later in the first
quarter of 2016.

As of this writing, Mazda has not revealed official details
about its pricing; however, we believe its price will not
change much from the current model which starts at $ 30,865
MSRP including destination charges.
