Our spy photographers caught up with the 2018 Honda CR-V
undergoing testing on the streets of Ohio in the US. The model
was adorned in its actual production body but was under heavy
camouflage. As such, we couldn’t tell much about its styling
but the shots have helped us craft a rough idea of what to
expect from the next-gen Honda CR-V.
2018 Honda CR-V Exterior
From the camouflaged model, we can tell that Honda has upgraded
the exterior profile of the CR-V. The model has however
retained the CR-V look we are familiar with. Its angular grille
is adopted from theHonda HR-V.
It is flanked by new looking headlights with LED lighting.
Further, we can tell that the model has a sportier greenhouse
and a pronounced shoulder line. At the rear, the new CR-V will
feature wraparound taillights which extend to the tailgate. It
also has a spoiler mounted on the tailgate. The rear also
features a new, sporty exhaust system. The sides largely remain
unchanged but we will be able to compare the models better once
we get a shot of the vehicle without much camouflage.
In terms of size, we can tell that the CR-V is bigger but it is
difficult to gauge by how much. However, rumor has it that
there will be an option for the third row of seats meaning its
size could increase significantly.
2018 Honda CR-V Interior
Though our spy photographers did a great job capturing the
exterior, they could not get close enough to catch a glimpse of
the interior. However, we believe the model will undergo a
massive interior redesign to feature more upscale equipment for
extra comfort and convenience of occupants and for enhanced
safety. There will be more tech features to reflect the
latest trends in the industry.
The model looks bigger meaning there will be plenty of head and
legroom as well as an expanded cargo space. The current
model’s interior accommodates 5 passengers but as said earlier,
there are rumors that there will be an option for the third row
of seats. We expect to find quality upholstery with top trims
featuring leather upholstery, a new infotainment system, a
premium sounds system and a package of semi-autonomous driving
In a previous statement, Honda’s CEO Takahiro Hachigo affirmed
that the CR-V will have new technologies and improved features
to improve the model’s competitiveness.
Engine Specs and performance
As of this writing, we still don’t know the drive-trains Honda
will hook up the CR-V with. We understand that the automaker
will use different engines for different markets. Therefore,
expect an array of engines from a petrol mill, a diesel engine
and even a hybrid drive-train. However, the automaker has not
confirmed any details yet.
A 2.4 L, 4-cylinder engine on the current model with a maximum
power output of 280 hp is expected to carry over. Similarly,
the outgoing model’s hybrid variant used a 1.5 L gasoline
engine paired with an electric motor which is also likely to
carry over. According to rumors, a turbocharged 1.5 L,
4-cylinder petrol engine capable of producing 174 hp and 162
lb-ft of torque is also being considered by the automaker. I
expect the automaker to use an upgraded version of this engine.
A standard 8-speed automatic transmission is expected to come
standard across all CR-V trims. Some rumors indicate that there
will be a plug-in hybrid. The rumors have it that the said
plug-in hybrid will combine a 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine with two
electric motors. The models will be offered in either
front- or all-wheel drive systems. As soon as we get more
insight on the new Honda CR-V, we will let you know.
Price and release date
The 2018 Honda CR-V will be released sometime next year
probably in the first half. Since the automaker is already
testing the model, we are anticipating it could make a public
debut at a major Auto show before the year ends probably in Los
It is difficult to estimate the model’s price as at now but we
are sure it will increase from that of the current model.
