Today’s pick comes from Tennessee artist Valerie June, a soulful musician with a fantastic voice, and an easy transition for anyone impatiently waiting for the follow-up album by the Alabama Shakes. Thought not affiliated with Brittany Howard, and on a completely different level, vocally, June is part of a growing trend in a southern soul resurgence that is fantastic. Being a huge fan of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, I chose her performance of this song at Bob Boilen’s desk as opposed to the album cut. The awkwardness that Tiny Desk forces upon artist like June allows for a much more intimate performance, one that requires patience and and focus. Now, I’ve never embedded a timestamped video before, so if it craps out during the middle of the day, blame it on Congress or El Nino or something.
