Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport Concept

Volkswagen is known to excel when it comes to producing
futuristic designs. At this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the
auto maker released yet another concept, the Volkswagen Golf
GTE Sport Concept.

However, the new hybrid hatch might fail to make it to
production and only serve to gauge motorists’ interest.

Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport Concept Exterior

The automaker didn’t go overboard with the exterior styling of
Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport Concept; rather they used the current
Golf models for inspiration but added creative twist.

The body utilizes carbon fiber a fete adopted from the XL1.The
vehicle weighs around 3,000 pounds, could be less but
Volkswagen didn’t reveal the actual weight of the vehicle. The
vehicle stretches 162.48 inches long, 73.58 inches wide, and
stands at 48.62 inches tall and has a wheelbase of 98.62
inches. At the front, the automaker has relocated the blue
grille line close to the hood. The new grille features 3-bars,
a carbon-fiber front splitter and honeycomb air vents.

The vehicle comes with modified-narrow LED headlights and LED
daytime running lights that spots a C shape. The rear features
a roof spoiler made of carbon fiber, a redesigned bumper, and a
rear diffuser hooked with new exhaust pipes. Other features
include a low door section, mirror caps, window surrounds, side
sills, rear fenders, and a flared C-pillar. Its 2 doors open in
a butterfly style.

Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport Concept Interior

The cabin is built based on a true-sports-car design. The cabin
features only two seats with 5-point harnesses. The interior
features carbon fiber and microfiber finish in most of its
features including seat belts and door pulls. There is a
futuristic steering wheel.

The right side of the drive features controls that manage its
operating modes, DSG transmission, and an installed fire
extinguisher. There are three gauge displays which are designed
such that one falls behind the other. The first of the three
displays shows the engaged gear and energy status, the middle
one displays power being channeled to the drive and electric
boost while the third display which is the largest of the three
shows information on range and speed.

Engine Specs and Performance

Under the hood of the VW Golf GTE Sport Concept is an upgraded
version of the 1.6 L TSI engine borrowed from Polo R
WRC, and is scheduled to recharge the batteries of
electric motors. It produces 299 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
This engine is paired to a 6-speed DSG transmission system.

The unit is paired to two electric motors one at the front and
one at the rear. The front motor produces 114 hp and 243 b-ft
of torque while the rear one produces a similar horsepower but
with 199 lb-ft of torque.

Total power output varies depending on the drive mode. Full
power is produced in GTE mode where the TSI engine combines
with the 2 motors to produce 395 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque. At
this mode, the GTE accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and
reaches a tops speed of 174 mph. At this mode, the vehicle
features AWD via an electric propshaft.

In E-Mode the vehicle uses the lithium-ion battery which drives
the vehicle for 31 miles before recharging. When the batteries
are depleted the TSI engine automatically reengages to recharge
the battery until it is sufficient to switch back to E-Mode.

The last is the Hybrid-Mode which the vehicle returns to when
the battery is depleted and features two modes i.e. Battery
Hold which keeps the battery charge for use later and Battery
Charge which uses regenerative braking and silent coast to
charge the battery. In this mode vehicle accelerates 0-60 mph
in 7,6 sec.

Fuel consumption according to the manufacturer should not
exceed  2l /100 km (117 mpg).

Price and Release date

Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport Concept is the first time unveiled at
the Wörthersee Tour, but the big performance was at the 2015
Frankfurt Auto Show. Price is not yet known, since it is a
concept vehicle, but the assumption is that it will be in range
Tesla Model 3 ($ 35,000) or Cadillac ELR (MSRP $ 58.495).

There are reports that BMW is set to be the first brand to
release such as car which it has named BMW I3 in the market.
Tesla motors have its Tesla Model III which is way long from
production. The GTE sport will thus find a competitive market
when it launches if at all it will reach production.
